The Coastline
The Coastline is a comprehensive proposal for a continuous coastal defense system that doubles as a green public amenity. The project protects communities by adding a vegetated berm that limits how and where water can impact.
Water enters the Miami River basin at the mouth of the river between Brickell and Brickell Key. It also enters Biscayne Bay on either side of I-395 and further north at Haulover Inlet and the Stranahan River. The proposal creates interventions at these critical locations. During storm surge or major rain events gates at these inlets can be closed. This reduces the water that can be pushed up into these areas.
By focusing on these locations the project protects hundreds of miles of direct waterfront property. It also protects the vulnerable property not directly on the waterfront and all the land that utilizes these river and bay basins for water discharge.
By securing this physical safety the proposal allows municipalities to look to longer planning timelines. This stability reduces the need for band-aid solutions and duplicative infrastructure builds. It affords cities the time and safety to navigate complex future transitions such as managed retreat and transferable development rights.
The project is more than a linear park. It expands the waterfront in Brickell to provide acres of wide open park space. This network connects The Underline to Downtown Miami and extends across the I-395 causeway. This upgraded infrastructure links directly to South Pointe Park. South Pointe Park already features an incredible public amenity that runs continuously for miles up to Bal Harbour. The result is a unified greenway that spans multiple municipalities and miles of the City.
